PHEROMONE TRAPS
Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do pheromone traps work?
Pheromones are natural compounds that are created in the body of an insect and are used to communicate with each other. Many of these compounds have been isolated in the laboratory and are used to lure insects into a sticky trap.

  • How far apart should the traps be placed?
Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella), Cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), Warehouse beetle (Trogoderma spp.) traps should be placed approximately 25 to 50 feet (7-15 meters) apart on a grid pattern while clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) and Flour beetle (Tribolium spp.) traps should be placed 25 feet (7 meters or less) apart.

  • Does it matter where in the trapI place the lure?
No, not really. As a rule of thumb bullet lures should be placed in the bottom of the trap while others be placed in the top.

  • How high should the traps be placed?
Generally traps should be placed at eye level for optimum performance; however, can be placed at both higher and lower levels and still be effective. Flour beetle (Tribolium spp.) traps should be placed on a surface, with floor placement sometimes necessary.

  • Will these traps control my pest problem?
Pheromone traps are designed as a monitoring tool and will not necessarily control the pest problem. Traps used in situations with low pest populations can sometimes achieve control.

  • Will pheromone traps catch all insects?
No, as previously mentioned, pheromone traps are species specific. These traps are designed to catch one species or, if specified, several closely-related species.

  • I am using the traps, but I still see insects. What else can I do?
Pheromone traps are meant to be integrated as a part of a complete pest management system. Sanitation, inspection and removal of infested materias are all very important components of pest management and control.

  • Do I need to cut the cap off the lure?
No. You simply need to open the package remove the entire lure lure and place it in the trap.

  • How long will the lure last after it is opened?
Pheromone lures generally last for approximately 60 days at which time they should be replaced with a fresh lure.

  • How long does an unopened lure last?
By storing your lures in a freezer or refrigerator, they should be good for at least one year.
